How to Customize Your Wordpress Blog

Out of the box, a Wordpress blog looks plain and simple. Fortunately it’s very easy to give your blog a fresh new look that matches the theme of the content of your site. These are called themes in Wordpress, but they are often called skins or templates. They refer to the same thing, a custom layout, custom design and custom graphics.

There are lots of excellent, beautiful themes for Wordpress absolutely free and new ones are created every day. These free templates can be a very good starting point because you can switch to another layout later whenever you want a new design. And the best of all is that changing the theme of your blog will not affect it’s content. The content will remain the same even if you change the template to a new one.

If you are not satisfied with the quality of the free themes, or you want something more unique, you can buy templates from places like TemplateMonster. If you even want more, you can get your very own design from most web design companies. These are of course paid options.

Let’s start with selecting a new theme from the available free Wordpress templates. Once you logged in to your Wordpress administrator area, click ‘Appearance’, then ‘Add New Themes’. You have a number of options here to select from the free wordpress themes. You can either search by keyword or you can browse the Featured or Newest themes or the ones that were recently updated. Click on ‘Preview’ to get a larger image of that particular theme. If you found one that you like, click ‘Install’. You can even install more than one, then later you can decide which template you want to activate. When you installed one, you can either activate it immediately, or click ‘Themes’ to check what themes you have installed and which one is currently active. You can activate here the theme you like.

This is the most basic and most common customization you can perform on your Wordpress blog. The next step is adding widgets to your site. What are widgets? Widgets are useful additions to your Wordpress site, like a calendar, a links section or a search form. The good thing about widgets is that they can be activated or deactivated and arranged as you like. Depending on the Wordpress theme you activated, your site may support multiple places for widgets. In the Wordpress admin area, in the Appearance section, click ‘Widgets’. From that page you can use a simple drag and drop interface to select which widgets should show up at which place. Some widgets can be further customized. When you dropped it to its place, one or more options will show up. For example, for the ‘Recent Comments’ widget you can select how many recent comments you would like to show. When you finished, you can preview your site.

For a bit more advanced customization read our article about Wordpress Plugins. That describes how you can install and use additional features with plugins.
