How to Create a Post in Wordpress

So far in our articles series about Wordpress Hosting we described what Wordpress is, how to set up Wordpress and how to customize your Wordpress blog. In this article we will show how to add content to your site.

If you followed our articles, you should have a Wordpress site up and running that looks great. Now it’s time to add some content. Posting content to your site is very easy. Wordpress support two type of content. The first one is the usual blog style Posts. When you add Posts to your site, the most recent Post will show up on the top of the rest that’s why we can say that Posts are dynamic (their place is not fixed on a website). The second type of content in Wordpress is Pages. Pages are static content, their place won’t change when you add new pages.

This is how you can think of the differences between Pages and Posts: Pages on a typical website are the About Us and Contact Us sections for example. Posts on the other hand are for example new articles like the one you are now reading. The About Us section’s place does not change when we add a new page like ‘Terms and Conditions’. On the other hand, when we create new articles in our Wordpress Articles series, the most recent article will show up on the top of the list. If it sounds confusing, try creating a couple of Posts and Pages and you will immediately see the difference.

So how can you create Posts and Pages? In your Wordpress Admin panel, you will see a section called Posts and Pages. From there you can edit your existing content or you can create a new one. Click Add New under Posts or Pages depending what type of content you want to create. You will be presented with an editor that has two modes, Visual and HTML. Visual editor mode is a basic text editor and will let you edit your content pretty much the same way as it will be shown on your site. The HTML editor mode shows HTML tags instead of the actual content. For example, if you add an image to a post the Visual editor will show that image, but the HTML editor will show its HTML code only. Both editors support basic functions, like adding lists, links and images to your post. When you finished typing up your content, you can preview it, save it as a draft for further editing or you can immediately publish it. Once published it will immediately show up on your site but you can edit it later.

Wordpress Posts can be categorized. In your Wordpress admin panel, in the Posts section, you will find the Categories option. Set up the categories as you prefer. When you create a Post, you can select which category you want to post to. Categories help both your visitors and Search Engines to find your articles and posts on your site, so make sure you take advantage of it.

To add images or videos to your posts, in the Add New Post page, above the editor you will find an ‘Upload/Insert’ option. Select which type of media you want to attach to your post. You can add images from other websites or from your computer. Once you added these to one of your Wordpress Posts, they will be stored in your Media Library. Next time you can simply add these from this library to your post.

Wordpress has a really easy to use yet powerful editor that will satisfy your needs in most cases. Adding content to your website is as easy as everything else with Wordpress.

Make sure you read the rest of our articles about Wordpress Hosting. The next article will go through the most important settings of Wordpress and how you can use them to make sure that your visitors and the search engines can easily find what they are looking for.
