In our Wordpress Hosting article series we gave you instructions to set up and customize your Wordpress Blog Site. In this article we will provide you with an overview of what Wordpress Plugins are, how to install them, how they work and what you can do with their help.

Wordpress Plugins are basically programs that extend the functionality of Wordpress in one way or another. There are countless plugins for Wordpress in many categories. Most of them are free. Wordpress comes with a couple of plugins installed by default, the Akismet plugin is actually useful which checks comments if they look like spam.

To install additional plugins click ‘Add New’ unders the Plugins section in your Wordpress admin panel. Just like with themes, you can search by keyword, browse the most recent or popular plugins, or you can upload your own plugin if you purchased or downloaded it from somewhere. When you installed a plugin that you like, go and check its settings. Most plugins will not do anything useful without prior configuration.

Depending on the plugin, you may need to call it from your theme, install it as a widget or the plugin will simply work behind the scenes. Make sure you read the documentation of the plugin you want to use.

Finally let us suggest you a couple of plugins that you most likely will find useful.

  • All in One SEO Plugin: As its name suggests it helps with optimizing your site for search engines. The plugins aims to optimize title tags and the content of your site so that search engines will rank your site higher.
  • Contact Form 7: Our favorite out of the many contact form plugins. Very easy to configure and works great. Since most websites have a Contact Us page, you should consider setting up one on your site. With this plugin you can do it in minutes.
  • Yet Another Related Posts Plugin: There are many plugins that lets you easily show related Posts at the end of your Posts. This plugin is particularly useful if you have a large number of posts. It will look up posts based on a number of criteria.

Well, the rest really depends on the actual plugin that you are installing. Most of the recent Wordpress Plugins have a ver easy to use and intuitive interface for customization.

Out of the box, a Wordpress blog looks plain and simple. Fortunately it’s very easy to give your blog a fresh new look that matches the theme of the content of your site. These are called themes in Wordpress, but they are often called skins or templates. They refer to the same thing, a custom layout, custom design and custom graphics.

There are lots of excellent, beautiful themes for Wordpress absolutely free and new ones are created every day. These free templates can be a very good starting point because you can switch to another layout later whenever you want a new design. And the best of all is that changing the theme of your blog will not affect it’s content. The content will remain the same even if you change the template to a new one.

If you are not satisfied with the quality of the free themes, or you want something more unique, you can buy templates from places like TemplateMonster. If you even want more, you can get your very own design from most web design companies. These are of course paid options.

Let’s start with selecting a new theme from the available free Wordpress templates. Once you logged in to your Wordpress administrator area, click ‘Appearance’, then ‘Add New Themes’. You have a number of options here to select from the free wordpress themes. You can either search by keyword or you can browse the Featured or Newest themes or the ones that were recently updated. Click on ‘Preview’ to get a larger image of that particular theme. If you found one that you like, click ‘Install’. You can even install more than one, then later you can decide which template you want to activate. When you installed one, you can either activate it immediately, or click ‘Themes’ to check what themes you have installed and which one is currently active. You can activate here the theme you like.

This is the most basic and most common customization you can perform on your Wordpress blog. The next step is adding widgets to your site. What are widgets? Widgets are useful additions to your Wordpress site, like a calendar, a links section or a search form. The good thing about widgets is that they can be activated or deactivated and arranged as you like. Depending on the Wordpress theme you activated, your site may support multiple places for widgets. In the Wordpress admin area, in the Appearance section, click ‘Widgets’. From that page you can use a simple drag and drop interface to select which widgets should show up at which place. Some widgets can be further customized. When you dropped it to its place, one or more options will show up. For example, for the ‘Recent Comments’ widget you can select how many recent comments you would like to show. When you finished, you can preview your site.

For a bit more advanced customization read our article about Wordpress Plugins. That describes how you can install and use additional features with plugins.

So far in our articles series about Wordpress Hosting we described what Wordpress is, how to set up Wordpress and how to customize your Wordpress blog. In this article we will show how to add content to your site.

If you followed our articles, you should have a Wordpress site up and running that looks great. Now it’s time to add some content. Posting content to your site is very easy. Wordpress support two type of content. The first one is the usual blog style Posts. When you add Posts to your site, the most recent Post will show up on the top of the rest that’s why we can say that Posts are dynamic (their place is not fixed on a website). The second type of content in Wordpress is Pages. Pages are static content, their place won’t change when you add new pages.

This is how you can think of the differences between Pages and Posts: Pages on a typical website are the About Us and Contact Us sections for example. Posts on the other hand are for example new articles like the one you are now reading. The About Us section’s place does not change when we add a new page like ‘Terms and Conditions’. On the other hand, when we create new articles in our Wordpress Articles series, the most recent article will show up on the top of the list. If it sounds confusing, try creating a couple of Posts and Pages and you will immediately see the difference.

So how can you create Posts and Pages? In your Wordpress Admin panel, you will see a section called Posts and Pages. From there you can edit your existing content or you can create a new one. Click Add New under Posts or Pages depending what type of content you want to create. You will be presented with an editor that has two modes, Visual and HTML. Visual editor mode is a basic text editor and will let you edit your content pretty much the same way as it will be shown on your site. The HTML editor mode shows HTML tags instead of the actual content. For example, if you add an image to a post the Visual editor will show that image, but the HTML editor will show its HTML code only. Both editors support basic functions, like adding lists, links and images to your post. When you finished typing up your content, you can preview it, save it as a draft for further editing or you can immediately publish it. Once published it will immediately show up on your site but you can edit it later.

Wordpress Posts can be categorized. In your Wordpress admin panel, in the Posts section, you will find the Categories option. Set up the categories as you prefer. When you create a Post, you can select which category you want to post to. Categories help both your visitors and Search Engines to find your articles and posts on your site, so make sure you take advantage of it.

To add images or videos to your posts, in the Add New Post page, above the editor you will find an ‘Upload/Insert’ option. Select which type of media you want to attach to your post. You can add images from other websites or from your computer. Once you added these to one of your Wordpress Posts, they will be stored in your Media Library. Next time you can simply add these from this library to your post.

Wordpress has a really easy to use yet powerful editor that will satisfy your needs in most cases. Adding content to your website is as easy as everything else with Wordpress.

Make sure you read the rest of our articles about Wordpress Hosting. The next article will go through the most important settings of Wordpress and how you can use them to make sure that your visitors and the search engines can easily find what they are looking for.

In this article we will quickly go through the most important settings of Wordpress. We will show only the options of a default Wordpress installation. If you install any plugins their settings might override these standard settings.

In your Wordpress Admin Panel, click ‘Settings’. In the General settings page these are the most important settings:

  • Blog title and Tagline: These are very very important. The reason because they are so important is that Wordpress will generate the title of your pages from these settings and the title of a page is the single most important factor for search engine rankings. So if you want to make sure that visitors will actually find your site fill out the Title and Tagline options correctly, preferably including some keywords that your visitors are likely to search for on Google.
  • : Wordpress will send you important notifications to this address so make sure it’s a valid e-mail address that you check regularly.
  • The rest of the settings in this section are really up to you, they are self explanatory.

The settings in the ‘Writing’ should be left alone unless you know why you want to change them.

Reading section’s most important settings.

  • Front page displays: You can decide what you want to put on the front page of your website. By default, your most recent Posts will be shown. However, if you want that page to be a static Page, you can select that Page here.
  • Blog pages show at most: When you create a new Post in Wordpress, the most recent ones will show up on your blog pages. You can set here how many of these you want to show.

Discussion Settings:

  • Before a comment appears: It is very important that one of the available checkboxes are set to prevent spamming on your blog. The first one will require your approval every time a user posts a comment, using the second option, they will be able to comment after the first one was approved.

Privacy Settings:

  • You simply have to decide whether or not you want your blog show up in search engines. In most cases you want to do that, so keep the default setting.

Permalink Settings:

  • This is very important and the default setting here is not very good. Permalinks are also known as search engine friendly URLs but they are just as important for your visitors. Permalinks basically create an easy to read URL (address) for your Posts. Read the link with the available tags or use this suggested custom one: /%category%/%postname%/

You can leave the rest of the settings as they are, the default option should work well. If you do make a change make sure you know what you are doing as it might affect how your site works, what your visitors see or what search engines find on your Wordpress Blog.

Keep in mind that Plugins may override these settings. If you have plugins installed and the changes you make do not take effect, make sure your Plugins are not interfering with these settings. Please read our next article about Wordpress Plugins.

Wordpress is most known as today’s leading platform to create blog sites. Of course this is true and this is what Wordpress was created for. But there are a lot more types of websites you can create with it. You can set up personal or business sites, photo gallery sites and e-commerce sites, websites of a single page or hundreds of pages. It really your imagination that limits your options.

Wordpress is especially useful for those who have no idea what HTML, PHP, databases are or how they work. You can create very useful, beautiful and easy to use sites without basically any web design or programming experience. It is very very easy to use, extremely user friendly and the end result is often a lot better than websites that were custom developed and designed.

Are you a more experienced webmaster? Then you can take advantage of the more robust features of Wordpress. You can try customizing its template, you can add one or more of the huge amount of plugins available out there, most of them free of charge.

TinyHosts provides an easy to use interface to install Wordpress, so even if you know absolutely nothing about how web hosting works you can set up your blog in no time with only a few clicks. Read through our Wordpress Hosting articles to get a full understanding of how to install Wordpress, how to install a Wordpress theme, how to customize it, how to install plugins and of course how to put content on your blog.

Including images, photos or even videos in your blog posts is very easy thanks to the easy to use Wordpress post editor’s interface. You can either upload your images when you create your post or you can embed images or videos that are already online, for example on YouTube. Make sure you read our tutorial on How to Post Content with Wordpress.

One of the main reasons why even expert webmasters prefer Wordpress is that it creates websites that search engines will love. It will create a very easy to follow navigation system making it easier for search engines like Google to index your site. With only a couple of clicks you can even create search engine (and of course visitor) friendly URLs. Your visitors can more easily remember those website addresses and search engines will appreciate the keywords in them giving you a boost in rankings. That’s a very easy way to get more visitors to your site which usually is the goal of setting up a website in the first place.

If you have not yet decided how you want to build your website you should either try Wordpress, or Joomla or use our Sitebuilder to build custom websites. These are the easiest and most effective tools to build a website quickly and with minimum effort.

Make sure you read the whole series of our articles about Wordpress Hosting. The next part gives you detailed overview of how to set up Wordpress. You will see how easy it is.
