You own a website and you want to drive more traffic to it? One thing you must do is search engine optimizing (SEO), because most people (your customers) will use search engines and click on some of the first 10 to 20 results the top search engines show.
People will enter key search words when they are looking for services or products, so you have to optimize your site for a couple of popular search words related to your websites primary subject. There is a lot of competition out there so concentrate on one to three carefully chosen key words only. How do you do that? Here are some simple rules:
- Put the words you've chosen into the title-tag in the head area of your home page.
- Put the words into the link back text pointing to your home page.
- Put the words into the description meta-tag in the head area of your home page.
- Put the words into h1 Tags. Search engines will rate words in the h1 format highly.
- Don’t forget the plural forms of your chosen words as well.
The next thing you have to do is a link campaign. This means getting lots of links to your page. Choose quality links, e.g. links from sites which are ranked high in the search engines results. Search engines do not count multiple links from one other page twice - links from different (Class-C) IP addresses are valuable. You can enter your site to a couple of free Web Directories (one good example is this international Web Directory katulago - the server is located in Germany so you will get a link from a unique Class-C) IP.
You may also want to write a short article including one or two links to your site and submit it to Article Directories, one good example is this international Article Directory .
Keep in mind that Search Engine Optimization works as an ongoing process, so you need to get more links all the time. You may also optimize some sub-pages for different search words and do a link campaign for these pages as well.
Finally, you need time. Search engines update page rankings only 3 or 4 times a year. So if you have just launched your site, you must to do the SEO work and than wait a couple of months. The actual positions of pages in the search result list are updated every couple of days, so you can always tweak the optimization of your site once you have a good basic ranking in the search engines.
